Welcome Week 2010

An update from our good friends over at the Student Center...

It is unbelievable to think that not only has the Student Center been open for a full year, but it is almost time for the annual Welcome Week. The Student Activities Office has planned an exciting week of activities for this years opening week, which runs from August 27 to September 6.

Last year’s popular ARC Dance Parties are back with a bang this year! On Friday, September 3, Student Activities is hosting a text dance party. Dancing and texting skills will be put to the test and text messages will show up on the big screen! On Saturday from 4:30-7pm, students can celebrate their favorite Curry teams and play some Curry sports trivia during a Spirit BBQ with special guests Friday Addiction playing everyone’s favorite hit music in front of the Student Center. Rounding out the first full weekend on campus, students can head off to Six Flags on Sunday at 10am for an awesome day of rides and entertainment in New England’s biggest theme park. Tickets are just $20 and transportation is free. Who can beat that? You can find the full list of activities during Welcome Week here.

Hope to see you there, this year or in the future! And don’t forget to follow us on Facebook!

Orientation Fever

The Class of 2014 visited campus this summer for the annual new student orientation. Split into 3 sessions, students were paired with orientation leaders who guided them through two days of activities that helped familiarize them with campus and their future classmates. Students were also able to firm up their course schedule for the fall term and get a jump start on their summer reading requirement, The Pact.

Another common thread throughout the sessions was the blistering heat. So enjoy the rest of the summer - because in New England
, seasons change fast.

Be sure to browse the collection of photos from orientation below.

Cruisin' into Spring

Sorry I haven’t been able to update you in a while. I’ve been extremely busy trying to balance school work, Student Government, and spending time with friends and family.

Luckily, Spring Break came at the perfect time! It was a much needed week of relaxation and tanning. I went on a cruise with 9 of my friends. It was amazing. Definitely an experience that made me wish I went on a semester-at-sea with my friends. But no worries – I’ve had a great time throughout my 4 years. I’ve gone on a bunch of trips with my buddies, many of which were through the ‘Curry Up and Go’ program.

Now that Spring Break is over, we only have approximately 50 days left of school. It’s definitely time to get focused and finish my semester strong. I can’t believe that I’ll be finished with my undergraduate degree and out in the real world this soon! The whole thing is a bit surreal and scary, but I am confident that things will fall into place.

Yesterday, I got some great news! I was accepted into a graduate school for social work at one of the Boston area schools. I am so excited. I can’t wait to continue along this journey.

Till next time –

Amanda

Meet Amanda Ramirez

Hi everyone-

My name is Amanda Ramirez. I am a senior at Curry majoring in Criminal Justice and Psychology.

I am originally from San Antonio. I love Texas, but over the past several years I have grown attached to New England. My mom thinks it’s funny when I am back in Texas for break, but still call Curry home. But that’s because over the past several years, I have created a support system at Curry. Between my friends, my friends’ families, my teachers, my advisor, and the Office of Student Activities, I have created my own little Curry family.

Coming from Texas, one of the biggest shocks to me has been the weather. It snows a lot, and I have no idea how to drive in the snow. I talked to Curry’s Police Chief and he gave me a few tips. He also volunteered to take me out to a parking lot and try to teach me how to maneuver the car correctly. Just one example of how everyone at Curry is so nice and willing to help - it's amazing.

Speaking of snow and winter, this past Friday, my little sister, from the local Big Brothers Big Sisters chapter, wanted to go ice skating with her friends. So, we went to Ulin Hockey Rink, right down the street from Curry. During hockey season, the Student Activities Office sponsors a fan van bus to the game, but we just decided to drive. Anyways, my lack of coordination and balance made ice skating a little difficult. I tried holding onto the wall the entire time (see picture below), but I still ended up falling in front of the entire Curry College Hockey Team, no biggy.

Well, I have to be on my way now, I need to stop by the Kennedy Lab to print a paper and then it is off to my peer teaching for Counseling Theory with Dr.Kahn. I highly recommend his course for anyone interested in Psychology.

Till next time...
