I’ve been extremely busy trying to balance school work, Student Government, and spending time with friends and family.

Luckily, Spring Break came at the perfect time! It was a much needed week of relaxation and tanning. I went on a cruise with 9 of my friends. It was amazing. Definitely an experience that made me wish I went on a semester-at-sea with my friends. But no worries – I’ve had a great time throughout my 4 years. I’ve gone on a bunch of trips with my buddies, many of which were through the ‘Curry Up and Go’ program.

Now that Spring Break is over, we only have approximately 50 days left of school. It’s definitely time to get focused and finish my semester strong. I can’t believe that I’ll be finished with my undergraduate degree and out in the real world this soon! The whole thing is a bit surreal and scary, but I am confident that things will fall into place.

Yesterday, I got some great news! I was accepted into a graduate school for social work at one of the Boston area schools. I am so excited. I am a senior at Curry majoring in Criminal Justice and Psychology.

I am originally from San Antonio. I love Texas, but over the past several years I have grown attached to New England. My mom thinks it’s funny when I am back in Texas for break, but still call Curry home. But that’s because over the past several years, I have created a support system at Curry. Between my friends, my friends’ families, my teachers, my advisor, and the Office of Student Activities, I have created my own little Curry family.

Coming from Texas, one of the biggest shocks to me has been the weather. It snows a lot, and I have no idea how to drive in the snow. I talked to Curry’s Police Chief and he gave me a few tips. He also volunteered to take me out to a parking lot and try to teach me how to maneuver the car correctly. Just one example of how everyone at Curry is so nice and willing to help - it's amazing.

Speaking of snow and winter, this past Friday, my little sister, from the local Big Brothers Big Sisters chapter, wanted to go ice skating with her friends. So, we went to Ulin Hockey Rink, right down the street from Curry. During hockey season, the Student Activities Office sponsors a fan van bus to the game, but we just decided to drive. Anyways, my lack of coordination and balance made ice skating a little difficult. I tried holding onto the wall the entire time (see picture below), but I still ended up falling in front of the entire Curry College Hockey Team, no biggy.

Well, I have to be on my way now, I need to stop by the Kennedy Lab to print a paper and then it is off to my peer teaching for Counseling Theory with Dr.Kahn. If so, we've created a list of helpful tips and recommendations for your visit to campus.

#1 - Arrive early, but not too early
No need to arrive at the crack of dawn, but arriving a few minutes early would probably be beneficial. Although check-in and the Information Fair begin at 10:00am, it would be a good idea to arrive sometime between 9:45-10:00. We are expecting record turnout, so expect some minor traffic as you pull into campus on Rt. 138 / Blue Hill Avenue.

#2 - Wear comfortable shoes
Situated on 137 acres, chances are you'll want to walk around and explore our beautiful tree-clad campus. Walking tours of campus will be available throughout the day and typically last 45 minutes. If you get tired, don't worry - we've arranged to have trolleys transport you around campus.

#3 - Bring a notepad and a few questions
Throughout the day there will be many opportunities to speak with professors and faculty members. If you are interested in a particular academic program, this will be a perfect time to ask a question or two.

#4 - Attend the First-Year Experience session
Are undecided about what you want to study in college? If so, this session is for you. Learn about all the ways that our small college environment will help you explore different liberal arts and pre-professional based programs.

#5 - Get your Passport stamped and win a prize!
When you check-in, you will be given a passport to Curry College. As you explore our new student center, you can present your passport to any student service office or academic department for a stamp. Once you have at least 5 stamps in your passport, head to the Admission table to receive a free t-shirt and be entered to win some great prizes!

In the Swing of Things

Hey all - it's Sofia again! October is finally here, and things are busy. Classes are finally getting into gear with papers, exams, etc. My favorite thing about all my classes is how small they are. My biggest class right now is 18 and my smallest is 8. I love the fact that all my teachers know who I am on a first name basis and that I can contact them whenever I need to (some even give out cell phone numbers!).

I am contemplating taking my Biology minor and making it a second major. There is a lot of flexibility here - that's what's great about being here, they are willing to create an opportunity that will help you succeed in what you want to accomplish. My advisor has been a rock for me. I tend to get anxious about deciding which classes I may want to take in the future and she has been there to help me through. Anyone you work with, from admissions to professors to academic advising, is always here for you. It’s too bad I didn’t find Curry sooner!

Recently, I discovered the speaking center we have on campus. I like public speaking but having to give a lengthy speech in class can be intimidating. The speaking center really helped me build my confidence in what I was discussing. They offer half hour appointments, where you can be videotaped and receive feedback on your speech.

Clearly, I love where I am and what I’m doing. My residence hall, Main House, has had so many events that bring the floors together. Between a s'mores party, ice cream social, and barbeque, I think we’ve got all the food groups covered. Everyone in my dorm is really great!

Clubs are in full swing at this point and some interesting things are coming up around campus. As a member of the Student Ambassadors, we are working on a canned food drive for local communities. We're also having out first Student Government meeting today to create committees and brainstorm some new ideas. As for Romeo and Juliet, rehearsals are getting off to a good start. We meet three times a week and the cast is really starting to get into it.

On a fun note, I visited Boston for the first time with some friends! We traveled down to Harvard Square, in Cambridge, and had a great time. If you ever need a place to eat, look for Fire and Ice. It's an all-you-can-eat buffet, but here’s the twist where you choose what type of meat and pasta or veggies you want, and they grill it for you on the spot. It’s so good - I would definitely go back again. This picture is of my friends Julia, Sarah, and I in front of the Harvard T stop on our way back. We hope to go back for a day in the next few weeks. Well, I guess that’s all for now. Check back for another update shortly. Till next time!

Welcome Week Rewind

This year's Welcome Week had a special feel to it. New students were treated to a wide range of activities, many of which took place in the new student center. In addition to performances by local bands, a hypnotist and a comedian, new students danced the night away on a late-night Boston Harbor cruise and honed their poker skills at the black light casino night. I just transferred to Curry from Syracuse and let me tell you, it’s probably one of the best decisions I’ve made in my entire life. I’ve been living here for almost three weeks and I have become involved with so many clubs/organizations, met so many new people, and absolutely love my classes. Curry turned out to be the perfect place for me! I am going to be updating the blog frequently so that all of you out there can read what its like to be a transfer (or even a new student) here at Curry.

I’m 19 years old and transferred in as a junior. I’m majoring in Communications with a Minor in Biology. Odd combo I know, but it's the things I’m most interested in. I also love to dance and perform - two things Curry offers.

In the last three weeks I’ve managed to do a lot! I landed a part time job in admissions giving tours, became the Student Government Association Representative for Student Ambassadors (a group of students who help with open houses), and was given the role of the Nurse in “Romeo and Juliet” (learn more about Curry Theater). Some of the other clubs I hope to join include the Ski Club and ONE Curry. And lets not forget that I am taking 18 credits, while still some how having enough time to eat , sleep, workout and get all my homework done.

Some of the reasons I decided to transfer to Curry were because of the small size of Curry (2000 students), its close proximity to one of the best cities in New England - Boston, and the calming, accepting vibe I felt when I walked onto this campus. Curry may be small, but it’s definitely got the heart. The faculty here gives their 100 percent to make this place the best that it can be.

So much to talk about and so little space! If any of you reading have questions – leave a comment! I’ll try my best to respond ASAP.

The Center of Campus

In the few short months since its grand opening, the new student center has already hosted a US Congressional event, a series of Reebok/NFL commercials featuring players from the NY Jets (see previous post), a comedian from the popular TV show, The Last Comic Standing and a New Student Convocation.

But it isn't just the large events that have made the student center truly the center of campus activity. It's where the everyday routines of students take place, from exercising in the state-of-the-art fitness center, to meeting classmates for lunch in the dining marketplace, to shopping for Curry gear in the expanded clothing line in the new bookstore.

So if you haven't been to campus lately, I suggest you plan your visit today! It's hard not to notice the stunning new facade that dominates the center of our lush campus. Most recently, the new facility caught the eye of Reebok. They chose our campus as the site to film a series of NFL commercials featuring players from the NY Jets. The dining marketplace, the locker rooms, and the southern exterior of the building served as backdrops in the commercials. So go ahead and take a look at the spots dubbed, "The Lighter Side of Training Camp." Personally, I think they are hilarious.

Change is Good

Despite having experienced one of the rainiest Junes on record, our campus has remained busy. New and returning students will undoubtedly notice that the Drapkin Student Center has been removed. In its place – a stunning view of the new student center and an markedly larger Westhaver Park. Personally, my favorite part of the new student center is the new dining marketplace. I give the food five stars and am sure it would receive a high Zagat rating. Don't believe me? Come and check it out for yourself!

Choose your path to explore Curry today!

If you haven't visited campus yet or just want to learn more about Curry College, definitely check out our new Virtual Tour! I spent most of my time taking in the warm weather and relaxing on the beach. It was nice to have a small break from all of my school work.

Now that I’m back on campus, my professors have immediately begun assigning papers and homework. This semester I’m taking five courses: Public Speaking, Communication Research, Crisis Communication, Intercultural Communication and Case Studies in Public Relations. Despite all of the homework, I’m happy to be back because I get to hang out with my roommates. I live in a suite-style residence hall, which means I share a common living area with five of my friends. Here is a picture of my roommates playing Xbox 360. We are getting pretty good at NHL 09 and we have some battles, let me tell you. I met my roommates freshman year and we have been friends ever since. We are all on the soccer team which takes up much of our time in the fall.

Lately, its been a little warmer here, which is great news because we are all excited for spring—goodbye heavy winter jacket, hello shorts and t-shirts! Did you know that Curry College is one the first colleges in the country to offer HDTV instruction? This is one of the many cool facts that was covered during the tour. So check back in the coming months for a link to the video!

Visit Curry College

With summer fast approaching, it's a great time to plan a visit to Curry College!
